Bible Study Leftover
In preparing for today’s discussion of the past Sunday’s readings, one of the comments I came across was a speculation that the other unnamed disciple accompanying Cleopus along the way to Emmaus was Mrs. Cleopus, his wife. It didn’t work out that I could work this thought into the discussions, which is just as well, because I don’t feel inclined to believe it. I would think if the two disciples were man and wife, it would be so noted in the Gospel. Furthermore, it strikes me as an example of trying to thrust women into the middle of things just for the sake of having women included wherever possible, as is done in the movie industry where one of the elements of the creative formula is to have a “romance” angle, even when it is not germane to the story, so that the female members of the audience will feel some identification with goings-on which might otherwise bore them silly.
