One Apostle to the others, who have just seen the Lord, as they hear Thomas coming up the stairs:

“I still say we shouldn’t tell Thomas. He’s always doubting everything and asking for proof!”

Bible Study Leftover

Today there was a lot of interest in getting inside the heads of the Apostles holed up in the Upper room during the time between the Crucifixion and Pentecost. I proposed that maybe Doubting Thomas had a notion that the other ten might be toying with him, lofting a story about the Lord visiting them while he was away. My father was a fireman, and he told many stories of how some the men playing tricks or practical jokes on others, perhaps out of boredom or a well developed sense of mischief. My theory wasn’t seized upon as being particularly revelatory or suggestive. One of the group even suggested that perhaps Thomas was not with the group because he was out somewhere spreading the word about Jesus, which I had never heard suggested before. But it was said with a sense of respect and admiration for Thomas, and it’s a beautiful thought.
