Bible Study Leftovers

Yesterday the subject that seemed to generate the most interest within our group was the question of whether Judas was condemned  to Hell. Our moderator suggested that we see what is said on the subject in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. But distraction and group dymanics won the day, and the catechism sat on the table in the middle of the room unconsulted.

Just as well. It doesn’t seem to address the question of Judas’ eternal destiny, but does provide many statements of principle, such as a treatment of Suicide, which may be brought to bear on the question, so that there seems to be plenty of room for discussion and disagreement about it. The only mention of Judas I could find in my follow-up at home  is in Paragraph 597, “Jews are not collectively responsible for Jesus’ death  The historical complexity of Jesus’ trial is apparent in the Gospel accounts.  The personal sin of the participants (Judas, the Sanhedrin,  Pilate) is known to God alone.”

AND Judas!
