JESUS’ SENSE OF HUMOR
There’s a theory of humor which traces its appearance to a discontinuity between the points of view of the people together in a situation. An example would be the old Candid Camera show, where one person is innocently entered into a staged situation where normal expectations have been violated by rigging or jiggering everyday surroundings so that nothing happens the way it is “supposed to,” the way the poor victim of the rigged practical joke expects it to happen.
What greater discontinuity could there be than that between us ordinary human people and the Son of God? Of course, Jesus loves us,and isn’t bent on luring us into preposterous embarrassments.
But just the awareness of the extreme contrast between the way Jesus might be seeing something and the way others, say, the Pharisees, might see the same thing, can be subtly amusing, along with often being frustrating and exasperating . An example is Jesus challenging Doubting Thomas to touch His Sacred Wounds, knowing of course, what Thomas had previously declared to the other apostles, and that his braggadocio would evaporated standing before the Risen Lord.
