A CATHOLIC WONDERING
A couple in our Small Faith Sharing group had a discussion about the world in the time leading up to God’s contact with Abram, and asked me for my thoughts. What was the nature of religion and was there an awareness of God during this epoch?
My uninformed contribution was that Abram was a pagan, but there was an awareness , however weak, in the hearts of those early peoples, as there always is, of the existence of God. I am thinking that the account of the mysterious Priest Melchizadek might testify to some kind of organized worship and awareness of God unless, as I have heard, he was actually a a pre-Incarnation theophany, an earthly manifestation of God the Son.
Now that I think about it, wasn’t that business about the Tower of Babel a product of this era? Talk about misty prehistory!
