THINKING OF OTHERS

I think we tend to neglect the importance of fostering a consciousness of community as an indispensable component  of our struggle toward pleasing God.

Our Assistant Pastor frequently refers to “the people of God” which, I trust, helps nudge people away from the prevalent ‘Jesus & me’ mentality.

In the Bible we read about “the children of God,”  ”the multitude,” and other reminders of how God sees us as collectivities as well as individuals.

We are to love our neighbor(s) as ourself.  I remember my older siblings trying  expand my social horizons by asking, “What would happen if everyone acted like you’re acting?”

Etiquette is based on the principle that to be highly civilized is to consider, maximize and enhance the sense of well being of the ‘other people’ in one’s world.

In how many areas of life might we not improve our outlook by thinking in group terms? The family meal, instead of individual, spontaneous grazing. Decorous behavior in public, instead of ‘acting out.’ Seeing the attractive member of the opposite sex as a member of a family and a community, rather than as a truffle to be plucked and enjoyed.  The library book as something to be treated gently, so that future borrowers will still find it in nice condition. The income tax as a contribution toward the general welfare, rather than an appropriation of one’s substance.

Well, maybe that last one is a bit far fetched.
