THE GIFT OF (DIVINE) SELF
I was pondering how the opposite sex appeals to me on additional levels I hadn’t identified, beyond visual appeal, friendliness, vitality and intellectual stimulation. It struck me that I hadn’t been particularly conscious of the appeal that resides in the perceived readiness or willingness of another person to”give” the self as a wholesome and valuable gift, one person volunteering to fulfill the nature of another.
In church, this line of thought, still percolating through my thoughts, led me to realize that the Holy Eucharist is a supreme example of this: Jesus so arranged things that he can give Himself, the most wholesome and most valuable Gift, to us totally, body and blood, soul and divinity, in the sacrament He instituted to remain with us for all time.
Our love for God can be even stronger when we perceive Him as totally willing to give Himself to us, fulfilling our nature.
